The Sol Terminal Computer

The Sol Terminal Computer designed by the Home Brew Computer Club president Lee Felsinstien and was built by Processor Technology. Originally designed to be a TV Terminal, the makers decided that since it included an 8080 microprocessor that they should develop it into a full blown computer.

This was the first microcomputer with a built in video display interface, and, by using ROM, one of the first to eliminate the need for switches for entering programs into the computer's memory. The SOL system would be ready to accept commands from keyboard as soon as it was turned on, thanks to a monitor program in ROM. It was also sold as a kit.

The Sol 1 was arguably the best microcomputer available in 1976-77. While the IMSAIs and Altairs of the world were being sold to hobbyists, the Sol was marketed for professionals. Processor Technology equipped its systems with RAM, ROM, video display technology, disk drives, a proprietary disk operating system, and language compilers.
