Software has its own story to tell and it can be told following two story lines. Application development, and Operating System development. In most of the story lines a clear trend evolves with Microsoft gobbling up all the competition and taking the majority market share. Operating systems started with CPM, which was then overtaken by DOS. Windows overshadowed DOS, and Linux is making a run at Microsoft.

The application story is an interesting one as we follow the deployment of Wordstar which goes to Wordperfect which becomes Word. Visicalc becomes supercalc which is bought by Lotus and then is overtaken by Excel another MicroSoft product.
