Hayes pioneered the 'Smart Modems'. These modems fit inside the computer and could be programmed to automatically dial a phone number or answer the phone. Hayes advertised: "Since it is a direct connect device, it has none of the losses and distortions associated with acoustic couplers.

There are two program selectable speeds for the Micromodem 100-- a high speed of 300 BPS (baud) and a factory set low speed of 110 BPS. The low speed may be hardware adjusted from 45 to 300 BPS."
