Course Overview

Participants in this five day course will discuss and build on the basic concepts learned in the introductory virtual training courses, Project Management Basics (FPM 120A) and Project Management and the Project Lifecycle (FPM 120B). The participants will apply basic concepts in hands-on exercises. By taking FPM 121 the participants will satisfy the FAC-P/PM entry level certification training requirements.

  • Integrate multiple roles and responsibilities as invested resources to make program/project decisions

  • Connect principles of systems engineering to monitoring and controlling a program/project

  • Review the Project Management Plan and Contracting Approach
  • Review the acquisition plan, including the:
    • Requirements document
    • Source selection plan
    • Independent government cost estimate (GCE)
    • Quality assurance surveillance plan (QASP)
  • Participate in a performance work statement (PWS) exercise
  • Review the importance of market research on the acquisition
  • Conduct an analysis of alternatives using a total ownership cost estimate
  • Participate in a QASP exercise

6.0 — A Systems Engineering Approach

  • Review definition of a system
  • Review the systems engineering approach
  • Consider the source of a problem in the system
  • Determine system-level requirements
  • Decompose to item-level requirements
  • Consider design solutions
  • Analyze recommendations to determine best value
  • Review testing strategy
    • Developmental testing
    • Operational testing

 7.0 — Measuring Performance

  • Review major documents, activities, and responsibilities of the development phase
  • Identify project attributes that can be used as key performance indicators
  • Review methodologies for monitoring and controlling projects including development of project management plans and earned value management (EVM)
  • Demonstrate that project baseline equals schedule baseline plus cost baseline plus scope baseline

 8.0 — Integrated Case Study Project
